Identification

Adult house flies are about 1/8″ to 1/4″ long. Female flies are usually larger than the male flies. They are a dull gray with a silver and a gold stripe on their face.

Detection

While some flies have been know to migrate up to 20 miles after hatching, most stay within a mile or two of where they hatch. An adult female lays between 350 and 900 eggs in her lifetime. Their eggs are laid in a moist area with a food source and hatch as maggots in 8 to 20 hours. These small yellow maggots then take days or weeks to pupate into a house fly.

Impact

House flies can transmit Salmonella and cause food poisoning. They transmit at least 60 other diseases to humans as well including typhoid fever, dysentery, cholera, tuberculosis, and even leprosy.

These flies are usually no more than an annoyance. However, they can quickly turn into a swam if the female has the opportunity to lay her eggs in a garbage can or other moist area.

Prevention

House flies are attracted by airflow and the smell of a potential food source where they can lay their eggs. They prefer a temperature of around 83 degrees which makes an inside environment appealing for laying eggs. They find their way inside through open doors and windows. Ensure that doors are shut and screens on open windows are not torn.
